Screening for pharmaceutically important exopolysaccharide producing Streptococci and partial optimization for EPS production
AbstractCapsular exopolysaccharide, hyaluronicacid produced by Streptococcus equi subsp.zooepidemicus, carries high importance inpharmaceutical as well as biomedical field. Inthis direction, isolation and screening forexopolysaccharide producing streptococcus fromnasopharynx of horses from Maharashtra and itsneighbouring place was carried out. Out of 70samples, none was observed to be Streptococcusequi subsp. zooepidemicus while, exopolysaccharide producing BM2 was isolatedwhich showed close association withStreptococcus dysgalactiae with potential toproduce hyaluronic acid. BM2 was comparedwith Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus(ATCC 43079), Streptococcus equi subsp.zooepidemicus (MTCC 3523) which producedexopolysaccharide 0.052, 0.050 and 0.097 g/lrespectively. Streptococcus equi subsp.zooepidemicus (MTCC 3523) gave higherproductivity; hence primary optimization studieswere carried out to achieve maximum its growthand exopolysaccharide production.
