Abstract:The processes involved in bioreactors are complex and a detailed monitoring of the chemical composition of gaseous, liquid and solidmatter involved in the bioprocess is of crucial importance for efficient operation. However, only a few parameters can be reliably monitored inreal time with commercially available instrumentation, but there is a growing demand and need for effective and efficient processmonitoring tools. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy has proved to be a powerful method for the study ofvarious biomedical and bioanalytical applications. In this paper, applications of this analytical method for bioprocess monitoring havebeen discussed by reviewing the relevant literature from the last ten years. Furthermore, recent advances in our laboratory in the field ofbio-reactor monitoring by use of mid-IR attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy and the development of mid-IR sensor systemsfor continuous biofluid monitoring based on transmission spectroscopy have also been addressed.
